Marley
Last year, i saw Marley and Me on DVD. The ending wasn't so hard because I had heard ahead of time that the dog died. I watched again tonight, this time with my wife. I have to say, the 2nd time around, I have an even greater appreciation for this movie. It's about so much more than a destructive dog. Way more. Dang good story.
Re: Marley
You should read th book....but the ending in the book is more emotional.

Re: Marley
I thought about a spoiler alert for maybe 5 seconds. The flick's been out for 3 years, and it had been out for one day in the theaters when I heard about the dog dying.Angie wrote:Hey there, spoiler alert would've been nice....
Re: Marley
But that's the thing. The trailers and marketing of this movie make it seem like it's about a dog, but it's not. It's about marriage, and you see throughout the story, as the marriage evolves and changes, that even if a couple is committed to each other, they can fight, and marriage can be hard, and that people make tough career choices for the betterment of their families. The dog is a part of the plot, but not the major part.meether369 wrote:I can't deal with dead animal movies or books.
Re: Marley
But the dog still dies... and while you, as a married person, get the lesson through the story of the marriage, I did not. For me it was about the unconditional love of an animal.
I actually would have never read the book, but someone lent it to me. I usually don't watch animal movies at all...whether or not theyndie, I'm too emotional of a person, and it's hard to del with. That being said, I loved both the book and the movie, and I'm glad I read it and saw it, but I probably will never see it again.

I don't care what the rest of the movie is about. If an animal dies, I come undone. Can't do it. Especially dogs.

Is it the same thing for you with animated movies? How about Charlotte's Web?

No, it isn't as bad with animated movies, although it is hard.
And, I haven't ever seen Old Yeller. And don't plan on it. Ever.

Re: Marley
Have you seen Don's latest blog posts written from the point of view of his dog, Lucy? I haven't read them all, but the couple I read were pretty interesting. Lucy's currently in the hospital and is quite ill and Don thought she was going to die. The latest entry has lucy talking about death and it's pretty moving:

Yeah, I won't see that.
It's good for the soul.
Not to mention clearing your sinuses.
Re: Marley
It's funny how people remember certain things from movies. Old Yeller certainly had a memorable ending. But I remember being struck by the way it portrayed life back then, and how un-P.C. such a portrayal would be if the movie had been made today.
Re: Marley
True, JW.
The book Tom Sawyer is banned in a lot of schools because the word, 'nigger' was used. For the time it was written that was acceptable and it wasn't seen the same as it is today. It was germaine to the story being true to the times.
That was a 'must read' for every kid when I was growing up (about 2 years after Samuel Clemmens wrote it ). We didn't see it as being 'un-PC' because 'PC' wasn't invented yet - thank God.
Now a lot of kids will miss out on some great literature. It's a shame!
