I like that in that manly ad there is a link to shop women's.
Also, is Dockers blaming disco music for the androgenation (I'm fairly certain that's not a word) of men? Because that's over simplifying at best.

But overall it's good. However, the same type of ad would not work for women.
Once upon a time women stayed home with the kids and had supper ready for her husband.

Right, and a lot of women I know do too and they thrive there but it's not for everyone which is ok as well I think. Also, where do I fit into that scenario? Am I a spinster? This is quickly developing into a line of thought much more than this ad so I'll stop and consider starting another thread.

I think that is actually a good line of thinking though, Bethany.....I have been having this conversation with a friend of mine, who is also married and has kids and our mom's are about the same age...and often critical that we like to do things that do not involve our husbands and children....there has to be a balance, and I can't stand when guys think there are certain manly chores, and they won't do anything but those things around the house. Good god, this isn't the stone ages! I am not a slave....marriage is about equality, not servitude of only one partner.....

I could go on and on, because I actually get ticked off at church about this kind of crap....

anyway, Bethany, according to the apostle Paul it is married people who have a more difficult time serving God, and singleness is desirable. And I can see where he is coming from. Marriage is great, but it is not the only way to live a completely fulfilled life.

Hey, thanks for getting me going, I needed to blow some steam.

I still think the ad is good, because let's face it, only yupsters wear dockers anyway.....right, JW? Smile

Angie and Beth, for the record, I never meant that our family's model is for everyone. I was just saying that the idea of a wife who cooks supper and families who eat at the table together has not disappeared, not by a long shot. Still, just as Angie's post makes it sound as if she has been hurt by comments from people who think this way of doing is the only way, I have to say that I get hurt when I see people make it seem as if any family who does it our way is antiquated, or the wife is some sort of a slave, or somesuch thing. Note that I haven't heard any such disparagement here.

The fact is, my wife is certainly her own person, and has a Master's degree, and could be making a lot of money, but this is what works for her. She isn't barefoot and pregnant, isn't subservient, doesn't let herself get ordered around. She and I have found a way of living that works for us, and it's just as valid as any other way of raising a family.

oh, I can understand how your family works, JW.... honestly, I wish many times that I could stay home, it is easier to keep things in order!

Working can really be hard when you have kids and are trying to juggle things.

I think that it does come down to understanding that our individual lifestyles are good for us, but may not work for others and to not judge thinking everyone should be like us.

Oh that's not what I was saying James. I think that it's lovely these women friends of mine, your Beth and so many women I don't know that are able to give that gift to their family and it also fullfills them in ways other things can't. I know for a fact that for the most part the women I know are happy and like Beth could do something else but choose not to.

My heart just twinges a little when I glimpse into a world that I don't feel a part of or even know if I want to be a part of at all (meaning marriage, mommyhood etc.)
These are just thoughts that come to my mind when I see this ad

I wasn't saying either of you were being judgmental about this. But the fact is that many do. I read it all the time. I felt pretty defensive when I first wrote that one post simply saying that we do it that way in our house. My shields are up because I have heard it so much.

Gosh, I swear I posted this before, but maybe not...

We women could use an ad, not so much about what jobs define feminity, but what actions do. Like, the fact that 2/3 of your bosom, most of your midrift, and all of your legs showing doesn't define you as feminine, or even sexy for that matter. A reminder that modesty is desirable and beautiful would be nice.

Even sex symbols of eras past had more clothes on than most of the "average" women I see nowadays. It's degrading to all of us, whether they want to admit it or not. Skin does not equate with feminine.
