Moral/financial dilemma! Empty Moral/financial dilemma!

Post by dave Sat Dec 19, 2009 6:25 pm

So, I need a new cell phone. Mine is on its last legs and besides I qualify for some money towards a new phone. I've gotten really used to my current phone which has a bunch of bells and whistles, and a slide out big qwerty keyboard. It makes online stuff, as well as texting, very easy and convenient. So, anyway, I'm trying to make better decisions lately, both morally and financially. I was at the sprint store today looking at new phones and there're 2 phones I was going back and forth between. One, which I really want, and is just plain fun and really convenient for online stuff. And another, which makes more sense financially, and is sort of an eco-friendly choice as well, but won't be as fun or easy to type on for online/texting stuff.

This is the one I kind of really want, and which would end up costing me about 200 bucks after rebate, upgrade discount, and taxes:

And this one would not be quite as fun, and the keyboard is smaller and not as easy to use, but would end up being free for me, and is a good eco-friendly choice:

I left the store without purchasing anything because I wanted to sleep on it, but I'm going to go back tomorrow and make a decision.

So, what do you all think?? Question

I am a sucker for cell phones, so I am not one to respond. Hope some good counsel comes from somewhere!!

That's a tough one, Dave. Android phones are supposed to be pretty amazing. Do they both cost the same amount monthly? I would say in the long run, the monthly bill is what is going to affect you most.

I have spent a big share of my life agonizing over spending decisions...or thinking I was...when the truth is, it is usually the small stuff that I do that kills me...eating out at lunch, too many coffees, whatever.

Get the phone that you are going to be happy with in the long run, think about what you do with your phone and how much time you spend doing those things. Just do what makes you happy, that is my advice!

Yeah, I'm on Sprint.

So, I went for a 3rd option. I finally decided that I shouldn't spend all of that money on the nicer phone, and I also couldn't deal with the tiny keys on the free phone. So I went with this one instead (which cost 100 bucks less than the expensive phone):

I miss not having a touch screen, and it's not as fast or as fun as my old phone. But it should be fine. I never even really learned how to do most of the things that my last phone could do anyway. I'm also the kind of person who gets distracted and can easily become addicted to the internet, so it might not be a bad thing to have a phone that's not so enabling in that area.

Well, I've got 30 days to change my mind if I really end up hating this one.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Thanks. Though, I gotta admit, it would've been fun to have that cool phone! Maybe when I make it as a famous rock star I'll just get one of the REALLY nice ones:

Actually, as a rockstar, you should go with one of these. I mean, if you REALLY want to be considered a rockstar...

ha! I'll take one of each!

You'd probably need both if you were a rockstar. I mean, with all those other rockstars calling you and all.
