I had to fire a guy today. Not my decision, but HR's, but I had to pull him into a room and tell him.

Then, he told me he had a laptop at home that belongs to the company, and so I had to follow him home. When I got there, his young daughters were happy to see him so early in the day, and jumped on him and yelled "Daddy!". Pretty much twisted the knife for him and for me.

This was hard.

It really sucks to be "that guy". That's a crummy day, I'm sorry.

WOW! That is HORRIBLE.

But, maybe that joy from his kids was the best thing about his day. And, to know he has that kind of love in his life--even if it means added responsibility--has to bring some solace, right?

I'm sorry too, but they also must've had good reasons for firing him, right?

It is truly hard to be in any kind of place where you have charge over other people.

Understand that I can't say much in a public forum. But he was a contractor that we were trying to hire as a permanent employee. And many companies have policies which keep them from hiring based on past events, not current job performance. And by past, I mean ( and in no way am I implying that any of these apply directly to this guy, but am just giving an example) things like credit report, any scrape with the law other than a speeding ticket, work history with other companies, etc.

So to see a guy work for several weeks and know that he could do the job, and that he had been unemployed and things were looking up for him, it's hard to have to tell him that despite his job performance, an HR person in a state 1500 miles away who has never met him has said he cannot work for us.

That's so hard. That's gotta be one of the worst things about management/HR etc is the getting to know people and then having to tell them they no longer have a job no matter what the reason is behind it.
