What movie have you seen lately?
Might as well start this one with an oldie: I watched "Stand By Me" again. Impressive movie for many reasons.
They way he got those 4 to act that well, at their age, is very underappreciated.
Then there's the fact that Keifer Sutherland was intimidating as a teenager.
And who would have thought that the chubby kid would end up being engaged to Rebecca Ramjin? I mean, what were the Vegas odds on that at the time?
And for all the Stephen King books which became movies, what are the odds that the two best movies (arguably) would be non-supernatural ones? (By which I mean Stand By me and Shawshank Redemption)
Ultimately, it's a relationship movie for guys. And those are extremely rare.

Jerry and Rebecca are married and have had twins. Obviously you haven't checked TMZ for awhile
I love both of those movies. So amazing.

Obviously.
But because you said this, I went to wiki and found that Jerry is enrolled in Law School now.

Was it on DMF recently that someone posted a pic of Jerry pumping gas in a speedo? Or was that in some other online corner of my life??

I'm thinking about going to see Brothers this weekend on my own. It looks really good.

Yeah, I don't think I could take the drama of that one...

I agree... it looked really intense.
I'm looking forward to Sherlock Holmes.

Me too!
I feel like there are a couple I want to see over break--that's one--but I can't remember the others...

Because I have read every Sherlock Holmes story ever written, and I also happen to adore Jeremy Brett, I am not looking forward to that movie. I don't really like RD Jr. and it looks like they are trying to make him the James Bond of 1890....there was only one woman that ever intrigued Holmes, and it was because of her brains, she was the only person who ever outsmarted him.

I love me some RD Jr...I haven't ever read the books, though. I should tackle that...

Watching Jude Law on Jimmy AS I TYPE, and he says, "We take the concept from the book of apprehending bad guys to a new level."
He also mentions that the relationship between Holmes and Watson is more of an Odd Couple one.
How many books are there?

My friends Dad is a big a Sherlock Holmes fan also... and he pretty much said the same as you. Maybe I will read them next year.

Re: What movie have you seen lately?
It's been out for like what, 3 years, but I FINALLY watched Jesus Camp today. I really don't know what to think of it. On one hand, it's a beautifully shot documentary about spirituality of kids, while on the other, it's a downright scary documentary about the adults who are training these same kids. Throughout the thing, I kept feeling anger towards the militant attitude of the adults and absolute wonder at the depth of the spirituality of the kids. However, I realize that the latter is directly a consequence of the former. And I don't know how to respond to it. I want my kids to have a deep understanding and strong connection to God, but I absolutely do not want to be so close-minded as to think that I have to indoctrinate them. Teach them, yes, but above all, I want the choice they make to follow Jesus THEIR OWN. Not one I made for them. What a stirring little movie. That Ted Haggard is in it before his infamous fall from grace is something I wish there was more than 5 minutes of footage on...Seeing it through the lens now, after all that, it makes perfect sense that he says "fabulous" twice in those five minutes of screen time. I think the filmmakers could have been more daring....maybe finding someone who would speak about how "the gays" are ruining America. That would have been fun to watch, but I suppose it wouldn't be as gripping of a movie since I can't say I hated any of the adults. They spoke on abortion, fleetingly, but I wish someone would go back to the same group of kids in ten years and ask them what they still believe. The most gripping part of this movie for me was when the little blonde boy got in front of the rest of the camp and was brutally honest about how he has doubts everyday about the bible, his faith, and in God. I REALLY wish there was a response to it, but they kind of just moved on. And that may have been the point of this film: that when you pour your heart out and are honest about your state of being, no one seems to care...let's just move on. There's that anti-abortion segment we have to get to. I want that kid to know that someone cares about his doubts. What's more, is I see so much of myself in that kid, it scared me. And for once, I'd like faith and church to not be so divisive, but rather people find comfort in knowing God intimately. Not be driven to evangelize as a 9 year old who is more scared than strong.

Steal a Pencil for Me--a documentary about two people who had a love affair through their time in a concentration camp in WWII.
Best Boy--a documentary from the 70s about the life of a cognitively impaired man. Watching him, I wonder if he had been born in this generation, if he would have been identified as autistic. He received no type of training or education. I can't really take the family's outlook on their son, though. The mother just said, "If God wants to punish people, he should do it with retarded children. It's such a heartache, you know." My blood boiled...

I just watched it again and was laughing. Jimmy does those bits occasionally, but hasn't ever done one with someone else. Good times!

Comedian--i really liked Seinfeld's part; the whole "getting back into the game" thing was intriguing. The young guy, though, annoyed the hell out of me.

Hangover, just as hilarious the 2nd time.

See, I found it funny--I picked up a lot more of the subtle jokes that were lost in the laughter of the theater--but, because I knew where it was heading, I didn't find it as outrageously funny.
