I picked up Maus, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and then Persepolis (because you mentioned it, dave) from the graphic novel section of the library.

hard to describe. So far, she's giving an autobiography. But the blurb says it's about what we'd like to say but are afraid to say in church. So I don't know yet how that all ties in together. But I have a long way to go.meether369 wrote:What's the story on that one, MT?

Read Mockingjay the final book in the Hunger Games series last night in 5 hours. Amazing!
Tonight I start back with Hunger Games (the first book) and will read the 3 books again in the next few days.

You can download it through friday on christianaudiobooks.com for about $3. I'm listening to it now.
Re: What Are You Reading?
Finished the graphic novel, Maus, which is actually an account of a Jewish man's experience in WWII Poland/Germany Very well done.
Now starting Crazy Love by Francis Chan for a small group. I was told about this book a year (or maybe 2) ago and looked into it but never got it and read it. Interestingly, right now, it is the message that has been on repeat in my life. So, I wonder what my response to it would have been back then. Now, I am being really blessed by his words.

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger.
Finished Catching Fire for the 2nd time, am waiting for Mockingjay to come back to me so I can read that one again. Almost done with Goblet of Fire as well.
I aimed to read 52 books this year and I have about 30 to go, I need to pick up the pace a little!

If you are thinking about getting that Anne Jackson book, please buy it now, preferably from a real retailer like Barnes and Noble or Borders: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

No fair JW.

I think this doesn't bother you, but he has some strong Hindu influences. It's a turn-off for me.Angie wrote:I have been reading Nouwen....I am going to have to get more of his books....great stuff!

I'm not sure....I know at one time he was a Catholic priest. His essays are beautiful and full of truth. I think that there are elements of truth to be extracted form the majority of things in the world though. As I have said before, I find that I am going kind of universalist, I guess.
Here is the wiki article about him, I don't see anything to that effect.... [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ....but you're right, it wouldn't bother me.

Yeah, I dig him a lot too. I've read "Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World" and "The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom" and liked them both a lot. Next on my list from him is "The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming" which has been sitting on my shelf for a while now. I've heard that it's one of his best. As soon as I'm done with my Merton kick (probably won't be for a while) I'm going to get to it.
I just finished the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and enjoyed it a lot. Not incredibly deep or anything but a lot of fun.
Also just finished Merton's "New Seeds of Contemplation" which totally rocked my world.
Just started "A child called 'It'" by Dave Pelzer and Merton's autobiography, "The Seven Storey Mountain.

Re: What Are You Reading?
I started Persepolis recently, Dave. And it's GREAT. Wowsers, she's talented...and the story is a lot to take in.
I agree with you Angie--truth is truth. If it's roots are in something like Hinduism, but it's viewed through the lens of Christianity, then it is just Truth Realized. Nouwen is amazing--but I usually find myself reading a paragraph and putting the book down to contemplate. He is simplistic in word-choice, etc, but so profound in concept. Takes me a long while to get through him!
And, Dave, I love Merton too. I actually read a lot of the two of them (Merton and Nouwen) together a couple years back.

Cool! Oh, and I want to read the one you just read, "Maus" sometime soon. Megan read it a little while ago and loved it too.
And speaking of Nouwen and Merton, Nouwen wrote a book called "Encounters with Merton." Haven't read it, but will have to some day.
Almost done with "A Child called It." It's one of the most horrific things I've ever read. I mean, not the writing (well, the writing isn't amazing - but it almost doesn't matter) but the content. It documents one of the worst cases of child abuse ever recorded. It's hard to fathom how Pelzer's mother could have treated him the way she did. Some of it literally made me sick to my stomach. Just grotesque, straight up evil shit.

Re: What Are You Reading?
I just finished the new Lucado book. Disappointed. Not because the book was bad. The subject matter and presentation were quite good. But it was just a repeat of stuff we've heard in several other books that are very popular and have been read by millions. I can't post my review till tomorrow morning, but that's the gist. I couldn't stop thinking of "Million Miles in a Thousands Years" and "Purpose Driven Life" and "Crazy Love" and "The Hole in Our Gospel" while reading this. So if you haven't read any of those, then I recommend the new book. Otherwise, skip it.
